Snallygaster

The Snallygaster is a half-reptile, half-bird terror from the mountains and valleys of western Maryland, a creature so alarming that early 20th-century newspapers ran breathless reports that caught the attention of the Smithsonian Institution and reportedly convinced Theodore Roosevelt to delay a safari just to investigate. German settlers of the Shenandoah Valley originally called it the Schneller Geist — quick ghost — describing a shrieking, tentacled flying beast capable of snatching livestock and children from open fields. Witnesses describe a creature with an enormous wingspan, a single great eye at the center of its beak, octopus-like tentacles trailing beneath its body, and a metallic, screeching call that precedes its dives. The Snallygaster exists in Maryland folklore as a shape of pure aerial dread: the thing coming for you from above before you ever knew to look up.
