Tommyknockers

Tommyknockers are small, human-like cryptids deeply embedded in the coal mining folklore of Appalachia, particularly in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Often described as standing around two feet tall, they resemble miniature miners, wearing worn boots, suspenders, helmets, and lanterns. Their faces are heavily weathered, marked by soot-stained beards and sharp, mischievous eyes that reflect the miners they are said to accompany underground. They move silently through the deepest coal shafts, rarely seen but frequently heard. The soft knocking sounds echoing through mine walls gave them their name, believed to be a form of communication. Many miners interpreted these knocks as warnings, alerting them to cave-ins, gas leaks, or unstable tunnels. While sometimes viewed as protective, Tommyknockers are also known for mischief. Legends tell of tools disappearing, lanterns being extinguished, and strange disturbances throughout the mines. Some stories claim they followed miners home, knocking on walls as a sign of protection or lingering watchfulness over their families.
